Rigging for Entertainment
4 day training course

Ard Soilse developed this rigging course as an internal training programme to
meet its obligation as an employer to ensure the health and safety of its
employees. It is one of a number of health and safety related initiatives that
the company kicked off approximately 4 years ago.

Both Joe Betts who developed the course content, and Jay Kavanagh who
participated along with other employees in its pilot, have gone on to gain the
PLASA National Rigging Certificate Level 2. Joe is completing his Level 3 qualification on 26th of March

2010 having already completed the written module in February.
The course draws from numerous international sources for examples of best practice, including:-
• VPLT SR 1.0 Provision and use of truss systems
• VPLT SR 2.0 Codes of practice for event technology
• BS 7906 Use of lifting equipment for performance, broadcast and similar applications
• LEEA Code of practice for safe use of lifting equipment
• PLASA National Rigging Certificate handbook

Legislative requirements from Ireland and the UK are also considered, namely:-
• Safety, Health and Welfare at work (General Application) Regulations 2007
• LOLER Lifting and operating of Lifting equipment Regulations
• PUWER Provision and use of work equipment regulations

We are LEEA members and are currently working with LEEA to get the course accredited by them.

( LEEA is the international trade association for companies who manufacture, supply or hire lifting equipment. LEEA provides its members with training, qualifications and technical support. LEEA members are subject to an annual technical audit to ensure that its members adhere to its high technical standards).

Ard Soilse is an endorsing company on the PLASA NRC scheme.

The course lasts 4 days, and includes classroom and practical elements.

What makes a rigger competant?
As in any profession, you must prove your knowledge and experience to be considered competant.
A good way of doing this is to attend training courses, work along side other riggers and take an assessment.

What asessment options are there?
Currently there is only one qualification in rigging that is recognised and accredited, this is the PLASA National Rigging Certificate scheme, with levels 2 and 3 currently open for assessment.
(Level 1 is trainee rigger and will be available soon, Level 4 is Rigging manager and will not be available for atleast another 2 years)
